Shop Small, Shop Local, Cash Mob
A little over 2 years ago Janae and I were asked by Jamie Judkins to take over Aberdeen Cash Mob. My first question immediately was “what’s a Cash Mob?” Now I’ve answered that question myself about a hundred times. If I had a dollar for every time I’ve been asked what Cash Mob is- I’d have a lot more cash to accomplish our mission- to support small local business.
What’s Cash Mob?
A Cash Mob is a group of people who assemble at a local business to make purchases. The purpose of these mobs is to support both the local businesses and the overall community. They may also serve a secondary purpose in providing social networking opportunities. Aberdeen Cash Mobbers meet at a designated location, then we walk to a nearby local business and spend $20 cash. The location is always a secret until we get there!
When do we meet?
Aberdeen Cash Mobbers meet every 3rd Saturday, the time and meet up location depend on where the business is located and what time they open. Although we are called “Aberdeen Cash Mob” we Cash Mob in Hoquiam and Cosmopolis as well. The best way to keep up with Cash Mob is by following the Facebook Page “Aberdeen, WA – Cash Mob”.
Why Cash?
Okay, now you know what Cash Mob is- but why cash? Paying in cash typically saves the small business owner between 2% and 3% of the transaction price in card processing fees. Local business owners typically spend money at other local businesses. When using cash, that same $20 is circulated throughout the community instead of being dwindled down by card processing fees.
Cash Mob is Nationwide
Cash Mobs happen all over the states and not just in Aberdeen! There is currently a Cash Mob in Ocean Shores as well. You can follow their Cash Mob events on their Facebook page “Happily Sharing Ocean Shores”. I would love to see Cash Mobs in every city in Grays Harbor! If you’re interested in starting a Cash Mob in your city don’t hesitate to reach out to me for some tips on how to get started.
Storytime
One of my proudest moments while running this event was our March 2024 Cash Mob. We had a fantastic turn out at Harbor Books in Hoquiam. We broke their highest sales day record since they have been in business! Melinda, one of the owners of Harbor Books, also mentioned how happy she was with the increased online engagement. Cash Mob not only tries to get these small businesses a good sales day, but we want to spread the word about these businesses people might not even know about.
We’d love it if you joined us on our mission to support small local businesses in Aberdeen, Hoquiam and Cosmopolis. With more Cash Mobbers in attendance, we can make an even bigger difference in our community!
